Retail / Customer Service

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Toy Store Assistant Manager-

The Assistant Manager will perform many of the same duties as other team members. In addition the position may include:

  •  Opening and closing the store
  •  Scheduling Staff
  •  Sales/Handling Returns
  •  Shipping
  •  Planning Calendar Events
  •  Overseeing Daily Store tasks
  •  Organizing Store and Layout
  •  Presenting/Planning Monthly Staff Meetings
  •  Ordering Product

Children's Book Department - Assistant Manager

The Learning Tree is as enthusiastic about children's books, educational books, and young adult literature.

We provide customers of all ages, giftgivers, and families with books they love. We aim to develop lifelong readers by offering the best children's and YA literature in all forms. 

The Children's Book Department - Assistant Manager will manage our book department, coordinate events, develop and maintain relationships, and drive sales. 

The assistant manager will work with our owners, consultants, book buyers, sales representatives, and staff, in addition to working independently. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Educate the staff on understanding, marketing, and selling books. These include interactive, board, classic, frontlist titles, cookbooks, study guides, nonfiction, early readers, chapter books, graphic novels, middle-grade and young adult novels, and more.
  • Work regular floor shifts, including opening and closing the store.
  • Hand-sell books and toys.
  • Participate in planning, setting up, and operating book events, including regular Storytime sessions, author events and signings, and Storypalooza.
  • Coordinate prompt and accurate book receiving, damages logging, and returns.
  • Maintain our book database so it provides valuable and searchable information for customers in the store and online.
  • Promptly address customer orders, returns, and shipping needs.
  • Oversee daily tasks.
  • Track orders and sales.
  • Coordinate orders for author events and other events. 
  • Constantly provide insightful data to our book and toy buyers.
  • Coordinate and produce social media and marketing content as part of a team.
  • Present book-related content to staff during our monthly meetings.

Qualities we seek in a Children's Book Department - Assistant Manager:

  • You are passionate about children's literature and want to share that passion.
  • Enjoy establishing strong working relationships with your peers and book stakeholders. 
  • Enjoy the company of children and teens and can relate well to adults.
  • Highly organized and attentive to details.
  • Believe in the power of stories to create empathy and understanding.
  • Familiar with classic children's literature and enthusiastic about new titles.
  • You have some ordering experience (preferred - not required) or experience in a related field such as libraries, publishing, or teaching. 

More details: 

  • Hours: Full-time
  • The Children's Book Department - Assistant Manager reports directly to the store owners, works alongside managers and assistant managers, and manages staff.
  • We use Counterpoint POS, a robust inventory and sales management system that feeds directly into our Shopify website.
  • Our ideal applicant is interested in long-term employment and can grow in the position as the business grows.
  • The starting wage is commensurate with experience.
